If you've got acne, there's a good chance you've become very good at skincare.
• You know what BHA is.
• You've probably tried retinol.
• You've bought vitamin C.
• You've searched for the "best" cleanser.
• You've watched videos telling you to cut out dairy, sugar or both.
• Maybe you've even been prescribed medication.
And yet...
You're still breaking out. So you do what most people do.
• You try harder.
• You buy another product.
• Change your routine.
• Cut something else out.
And start the cycle all over again. But here's what I want you to consider:
What if the problem isn't that you're not trying hard enough?
What if you're simply trying to solve the wrong problem?
The breakout isn't the problem.
I know that sounds strange. Because when you've got a painful spot staring back at you in the mirror, that's obviously what you want gone.
But a breakout is a visible symptom. It's the part you can see. It doesn't necessarily tell you why it's happening.
Think about the warning light on your car. If it comes on, you could cover it with a piece of tape. You'd no longer have to look at the annoying orange light. But the problem hasn't disappeared. You still need to find out why the warning light came on.
Your skin isn't all that different. The breakout is the clue.
And this is where I think we've got acne backwards.
We're constantly being told to treat the thing we can see.
• Dry it out.
• Exfoliate it.
• Suppress it.
• Cover it.
• Reduce inflammation.
And sometimes those things can absolutely have their place. But if your acne keeps returning, shouldn't we also be asking why?
Because two women can have breakouts that look very similar, and have completely different reasons for getting them.
That's why copying somebody else's skincare routine isn't always the answer. Their skin has a different story. Their lifestyle is different. Their hormones are different. Their products are different. Their habits are different. Their history is different. Their triggers may be completely different.
So why would the exact same routine necessarily work for both of you?
This is why I ask so many questions.
When someone comes to see me, I'm not interested in simply looking at their skin and handing them a list of products.
I want to understand the bigger picture.
• What's been happening?
• When did the acne start?
• Where are you breaking out?
• When does it tend to happen?
• What have you already tried?
• What medications have you used?
• What's your current skincare routine?
• What's changed?
• What does your lifestyle look like?
• What happens around your menstrual cycle?
• What are you putting on your skin?
And, importantly...
What does your skin normally do?
Because I'm looking for clues. I'm trying to understand the story behind the breakout.
You don't need another 10-step routine.
You might need to stop for a moment.
Instead of asking:
"What should I buy next?"
Ask:
"What is my skin trying to tell me?"
That question changes everything.
It takes you out of the cycle of constantly reacting to the latest breakout and puts you into a position where you can actually start understanding your skin.
And that's the approach I take through my HELP+ Method:
Homecare. Education. Lifestyle. Professional treatments.
Not because every person needs every single thing. But because your skin doesn't exist in isolation. It's part of you. And that's why I don't believe in throwing products at a problem and hoping something sticks.
• I believe in investigating first.
• Understanding second.
• Then creating a plan.
Because ultimately...
The breakout isn't the problem.
It's the clue.
And once you start looking at your skin that way, you may finally stop feeling like you're fighting against it.
