"I Don't Know Where to Start" Is One of the Most Common Things I Hear About Acne
This week, I heard someone say:
"I don't know where to start."
Honestly? It broke my heart a little.
Not because it was unusual, but because I hear it all the time.
If you've been struggling with acne for months, or even years, you've probably spent hours searching online for answers.
• You've watched videos.
• Read blogs.
• Joined Facebook groups.
• Asked friends.
• Bought products.
• Maybe you've even changed your diet.
Yet somehow, you still feel like you're standing at the starting line.
If that's you, I want you to know something.
You're not behind. You're overwhelmed.
And those are two very different things.
The Internet Has Given You Too Many Starting Points
Search "how to clear acne" and you'll find hundreds of opinions.
• Use salicylic acid.
• Don't use salicylic acid.
• Repair your skin barrier.
• Use retinol.
• Don't use retinol.
• Cut out dairy.
• Drink more water.
• Take supplements.
• Book a facial.
• See a dermatologist.
It's no wonder you don't know where to begin. The problem isn't that you don't have enough information.
The problem is that you've been given too much information, with very little context.
Here's the Question I'd Ask Instead
When someone comes to see me, I don't start by asking...
"What products do you want to buy?"
I start with something much simpler.
• Tell me about your skin.
• When did your acne start?
• Has anything changed recently?
• What have you already tried?
•How does your skin feel?
• Where do you tend to break out?
Those questions help me understand your skin story. Because before we decide where we're going, We need to understand where we're starting from.
Why Copying Someone Else's Routine Rarely Works
One of the biggest mistakes I see is people trying to recreate somebody else's results.
• A stranger online says a cleanser transformed their skin.
So you buy it.
• Someone on TikTok recommends a serum.
So you try that too.
Before long, you've got a bathroom full of products and you're even more confused than when you started.
The truth is...
Two people can have acne that looks similar but have completely different needs.
That's why what works for one person may not work for another.
You Don't Need More Products. You Need Clarity.
This is where my approach is different. I'm not interested in handing you another shopping list. I'm interested in helping you understand your skin.
Through my HELP+ Method, we look at more than just skincare.
We explore your homecare routine, help you understand your skin, look at lifestyle factors that may be contributing, choose appropriate professional treatments and, where needed, recommend additional support.
Because lasting skin confidence doesn't come from guessing. It comes from understanding.
So... Where Should You Start?
If you're feeling overwhelmed, here's my advice.
Don't start by buying another product.
Start by asking better questions.
• What have I already tried?
• When did my acne begin?
• Have I noticed any patterns?
•Am I treating my skin based on social media... or based on what it actually needs?
Sometimes, the most valuable thing you can do isn't adding something new. It's taking a step back and looking at the bigger picture.
Final Thoughts
If you've ever found yourself saying,
"I don't know where to start."
I want you to know you're not alone.
And I also want you to know that not knowing where to start doesn't mean there isn't a way forward.
It simply means you've been trying to navigate a sea of conflicting advice on your own.
You don't need to know everything about acne.
You just need a clear starting point.
And sometimes, that starts with a conversation.
