7 Common Causes of Adult Acne Breakouts (And Why Your Skincare Might Not Be the Problem)
If you're struggling with acne in your twenties, thirties, forties or beyond, you're not alone.
One of the biggest misconceptions I hear in clinic is that acne is something you're supposed to leave behind in your teenage years. So when breakouts appear later in life, it can feel frustrating, confusing and sometimes even embarrassing.
Many people immediately assume they're using the wrong skincare products. While skincare can certainly play a role, adult acne is often far more complex than that.
In fact, persistent acne is usually influenced by a combination of internal and external factors. Understanding what may be contributing to your breakouts is often the first step towards creating a plan that actually works.
Here are seven common causes of adult acne breakouts.
Hormonal Changes
Hormones are one of the most common drivers of adult acne.
Fluctuations in hormones can increase oil production within the skin, leading to blocked pores and inflamed breakouts. This is why many women notice their skin worsens around their menstrual cycle, after coming off hormonal contraception, during pregnancy or throughout perimenopause.
Hormonal acne often appears around the lower face, jawline and chin, although this isn't always the case.
The important thing to understand is that if hormones are playing a role, simply changing your cleanser may not be enough to achieve lasting results.
Stress
Have you ever noticed your skin seems worse during particularly stressful periods?
That's not a coincidence.
When we're under stress, the body produces increased levels of cortisol and other stress hormones. These can contribute to inflammation, influence oil production and impact the skin's ability to heal efficiently.
Many of my clients can pinpoint a stressful period in their lives that coincided with their acne becoming significantly worse.
Lack of Sleep
Sleep is one of the most underrated factors when it comes to skin health.
During sleep, your body carries out important repair and recovery processes. Consistently poor sleep can affect hormone balance, increase inflammation and reduce your body's ability to manage stress effectively.
While sleep alone isn't usually the sole cause of acne, it can absolutely contribute to persistent breakouts.
Over-Treating Your Skin
This one surprises a lot of people.
When acne isn't improving, it's natural to try more products, stronger products or more frequent exfoliation.
Unfortunately, this can sometimes make things worse.
Over-cleansing, excessive exfoliation and using multiple active ingredients can compromise the skin barrier, leading to irritation, inflammation and increased sensitivity.
Sometimes the skin doesn't need more products. It needs a more strategic approach.
Diet and Lifestyle Factors
Diet isn't the cause of all acne, but for some individuals it can be a contributing factor.
Certain foods may trigger or worsen breakouts in susceptible individuals, while factors such as hydration, exercise and overall lifestyle can influence inflammation levels within the body.
There is no one-size-fits-all acne diet, which is why personalised support is often so important.
The Wrong Homecare Routine
Using products that aren't suitable for your skin can contribute to ongoing breakouts.
This doesn't necessarily mean the products are "bad." It simply means they may not be appropriate for your skin's current needs.
One of the first things I assess when working with acne clients is their existing homecare routine. Often, small adjustments can make a significant difference.
Treating the Symptoms Instead of the Cause
This is perhaps the biggest reason adult acne persists.
Many people spend years trying to manage the visible symptoms of acne without ever investigating what may be driving it.
Acne is rarely just about what you can see on the surface.
That's why my HELP+ Method focuses on:
H – Homecare
Creating a skincare routine that supports your skin rather than overwhelming it.
E – Education
Helping you understand what's happening within your skin and why.
L – Lifestyle
Looking at the factors that may be influencing your skin health.
P – Professional Treatments
Using targeted treatments where appropriate to support your skin transformation.
+ More
Recognising when further investigation or support may be beneficial.
What Should You Do If You're Struggling With Adult Acne?
If you've tried countless products, followed advice online and still feel stuck, it may be time to stop focusing solely on the symptoms and start investigating the bigger picture.
Acne is rarely random.
There is usually a reason your skin is behaving the way it is.
Understanding that reason is often where real progress begins.
