Can You Wash Your Face Too Much? The Truth About Cleansing Acne Prone Skin.

If you have acne prone skin, you've probably been told that keeping your face as clean as possible is the key to clearer skin.

Recently, I came across someone asking:

"My dermatologist told me to stop washing my face in the morning. Will that help my acne?"

It's a brilliant question.

The answer isn't simply yes or no.

Because when it comes to acne, there isn't one skincare routine that works for everyone.

Let's look at why.

Is Washing Your Face More Often Better for Acne?

It's easy to assume that if you have oily, acne prone skin, washing your face more often will remove excess oil and prevent spots.

In reality, it isn't always that simple.

Cleansing is important because it removes dirt, excess oil, sunscreen and makeup. But cleansing too often, using harsh cleansers or scrubbing aggressively can sometimes do more harm than good.

The goal isn't to remove every trace of oil.

The goal is to support a healthy skin barrier while keeping the skin clean.

What Happens When You Over Cleanse?

Your skin barrier is your skin's natural protective layer.

When it's healthy, it helps retain moisture and protects against external irritants.

Over cleansing or over exfoliating can disrupt this barrier.

You may notice:

  • Skin that feels tight after cleansing.

  • Increased sensitivity.

  • Redness or irritation.

  • Dry, flaky patches.

  • Skin that feels oily again very quickly.

Many people think these signs mean they need to cleanse even more.

Sometimes, the opposite may be true.

Can Over Exfoliating Make Acne Worse?

Exfoliating has its place in an acne treatment plan, but more isn't always better.

Using multiple acids, scrubs or exfoliating products too frequently can leave the skin irritated and less able to tolerate the treatments that could genuinely help.

Rather than speeding up results, over exfoliation can sometimes leave the skin feeling sore, inflamed and uncomfortable.

Should You Stop Cleansing in the Morning?

This is where personalised skincare matters.

For some people, especially those with a compromised skin barrier or dry, sensitive skin, a morning cleanse may not always be necessary.

For others particularly if the skin is very oily, you've exercised overnight, or you're using certain skincare products a gentle morning cleanse may still be beneficial.

There isn't a universal rule.

The right routine depends on your skin, your lifestyle and your treatment plan.

Signs Your Routine May Need Reviewing

It may be worth reviewing your skincare routine if:

  • Your skin always feels tight after cleansing.

  • You're using several active ingredients at once.

  • You're exfoliating most days of the week.

  • Your skin is becoming increasingly sensitive.

  • You're constantly changing products because nothing seems to work.

Sometimes the issue isn't that you're doing too little.

It's that your skin is being asked to cope with too much.

Why I Take a Different Approach

One of the biggest misconceptions about acne is that everyone should follow the same routine.

In reality, every client I see has a different skin history, different triggers and different goals.

That's why I use my HELP+ Method, looking beyond the surface to understand what your skin actually needs.

Rather than following trends or copying someone else's routine, we create a personalised plan that considers:

  • Homecare – Building a routine that supports your skin.

  • Education – Understanding why your skin behaves the way it does.

  • Lifestyle – Exploring factors that may influence your acne.

  • Professional Facials – Choosing treatments appropriate for your skin.

  • Additional Support – Signposting further support where needed.

The Bottom Line

Can you wash your face too much?

Yes, for some people.

Should everyone stop cleansing in the morning?

Not necessarily.

The best skincare routine is the one that's appropriate for your skin, not someone else's.

If you've been jumping between different routines or wondering whether you're helping or harming your skin, it may be time to stop guessing.

Understanding your skin is the first step towards lasting skin transformation.
